Take a relaxing walk for around 20 minutes and you’ll find Gamla Stan, the Old Town of Stockholm, featuring classic tourist shopping, medieval architecture, cobblestone streets and historic buildings.
Gamla Stan is one of the best preserved medieval city centres in Europe and one of the top attractions in Stockholm. Stortorget, the main square, is the central point in the middle of Old Town. Here you'll find restaurants and cafés and also the colourful facades of the most photographed buildings in the Old Town. This is also where the popular Christmas market is held annually.
Västerlånggatan and Österlånggatan are the Old Town's major business and tourist streets. Here are the shops and restaurants next door along the street from Mynttorget in the north to Järntorget in the south. If you're looking for handicrafts, curious and souvenirs, this is the place to go.
The Royal Palace of Stockholm is situated in Gamla Stan. The impressive palace dates back to the 18th century and there are over 600 rooms split over seven floors. Take a tour and see the Royal Apartments and the crown jewels in the Royal Treasury. The Royal Guards are responsible for guarding the palace. Changing of the Guard takes place every day of the year and is a popular visitor attraction.
Don't miss Mårten Trotzigs gränd, Stockholm's narrowest alley. The alley is 30 meters long and only 90 centimeters wide at its narrowest point.
