428 - The rooms of the elements
It seemed quite natural to combine the Eastern philosophy of Feng Shui with the climate, nature and interior design style of Sweden. China has influenced Sweden in many ways for centuries, and interest in the East India Company has left its mark on Swedish fashion, furniture-making and architectural styles.
ANNE-CHRISTINE AXELSSON originally trained as a tailor and has also studied textile and design. In addition to working with stage design and costumes for the theatre, TV, film and opera, Ann-Christine has designed rooms for a number of private homes and companies. Ann-Christine used the Feng Shui idea of allowing the laws of nature -Yin and Yang -to create harmony and balance in our environment. These
five rooms at Hotel Birger Jarl each feature their own colour scheme, while the design and placing of decorative features and furniture are intended to exert a positive influence on all aspects of life, from finances and love-life to the ability to assimilate knowledge.
In room 428, the element of wood is represented by the green colour of the walls. Green symbolises spring and the eastern point of the compass and represents family and ancestors. The painted frog depicted with a coin in its mouth symbolises financial success.
