337 - A theatrical atmosphere

The colour scheme in this room is based on a number of interiors painted by Matisse at the end of the 1930s, delicately outlined to convey a thea-trical feeling

The walls are reminiscent of a stage set and the furniture has the appearance of chessmen against the chessboard pattern of the floor. The room’s fixtures, fabrics and artwork are all based on the ideas and designs of Tom Hedqvist.

TOM HEDQVIST is a textile designer who was educated at Beckman’s School of Design in Stockholm, of which he is now the director. He is also Professor of Graphic Design at the Swedish University College of Arts, Crafts and Design. Tom was one of the co-founders of the textile design company known as 10 Swedish Designers in 1970, and worked as an art director at a number of advertising agencies in Stockholm during the 1970s and 1980s. In 1990, he set up the FGH advertising agency and the following year, he launched the design company known as ELEMENT DESIGN.

Room 337 was created by Tom Hedqvist in conjunction with the project “Personligt - Måleritrend 2002” (Personal - Trends in Painting in 2002). This was a project in which Hotel Birger Jarl and the Trade and Employers' Association of Swedish Painting Contractors joined forces to demonstrate how it is possible to change a room by using colour and modern decorative painting techniques, as well as furnishing, thus providing inspiration and ideas to others.
